Two-Week Student Exchange in the USA

Hi,
I’m Merle, and I’m in class 9b. This school year, I spent two weeks of my fall break in the USA – more specifically, in California. And I can say this exchange was worth it!
Let’s start at the beginning: In March 2024, Ms. Hettmer told me about the program “USA4you,” which offers scholarships for a two-week trip to America. I applied online and then had to wait. After some time, I received an email inviting me to an interview in Dresden. During the interview, we had to complete various team tasks and answer questions. Two days later, I got the great news: I was accepted! Together with 14 other teenagers from all over Saxony, aged between 15 and 17, I would be flying to the USA.
Before we left, there was a preparation seminar where we got to know each other as a group and were prepared for the trip to the USA.

My Experiences in the USA
The flight to America took a total of twelve and a half hours. We were accompanied by our chaperones, Marie and Franka. Due to the nine-hour time difference, we arrived in the middle of the night and were warmly welcomed by our host families.
Over the next two weeks, we experienced so much: We visited a police station, the Universal Studios, the German Embassy, Joshua Tree National Park, Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign, and Santa Monica Beach/Pier. We also spent two days at an American high school and participated in “Culture Classes,” where we learned a lot about the USA, its people, and the language.
During this time, we lived with host families – incredibly kind people who made us feel right at home. You really don’t have to be afraid of staying with a host family!

My Conclusion
I can only recommend participating in such an exchange. You’ll create unforgettable memories and meet people who quickly go from strangers to best friends. Plus, you’ll learn to step out of your comfort zone.

So take your chance and go for it!
Best regards, Merle
